Food poisoning is a foodborne illness that arises from the bacteria that has multiplied in the food. Viruses, toxins, parasites, and some chemicals can contaminate food and cause a foodborne illness but bacteria caused illnesses are more common. Terms such as food contamination are just synonyms for food poisoning. No one can predict when they will be affected by food poisoning, but they can only take preventive measures to reduce the chances of them falling ill.

The following are a few preventive methods that one can follow to prevent getting affected by food poisoning:

  • Make sure that the food you eat is from a hygienic kitchen
  • Wash your raw materials and utensils thoroughly before cooking
  • Use clean cutlery and dishes to eat your food
  • Respect the expiry dates while using canned ingredients

Food poisoning can be detected with the help of various different symptoms however, the symptoms vary on the source of the infection. The symptoms can show immediately or even after some time, again depending on the source of the infection.

The symptoms of food poisoning are:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Mild fever
  • Weakness
  • Nausea

If you come across three or more of the above-mentioned symptoms then there is a high possibility that you have food poisoning. A doctor is usually able to diagnose food poisoning based on your symptoms but in severe cases, a blood test or a stool sample may be required to determine the cause of the food poisoning.
Usually, food poisoning can be treated at home itself and resolves itself in about 3 days. Taking rest and staying hydrated is very important while treating food poisoning. Vomiting and diarrhoea are ways of the body trying to throw out the toxins, thus taking any medicine to reduce either may slow down the process of elimination. Stick to bland and easy to digest food while until the infection subsides.

Foods recommended are:

  • Rice
  • Crackers
  • Plain Toast
  • Drinks that are rich in electrolytes
  • Chicken
  • Bananas

Stay away from foods and beverages that are heavy to digest:

  • Dairy products
  • Spicy foods
  • Fatty foods
  • Caffeine
  • Fried foods
  • Alcohol

The best way to deal with food poisoning is allowing your body’s immune system to eliminate the infection and stay hydrated to prevent any further aggravation. Any medicine should only be taken with consent from your doctor.
Sometimes bacteria can enter the body undetected and show symptoms up to 28 days later. A preventive check-up wouldn’t harm but only help. One should go get a check-up if they feel something is wrong, the symptoms might be negligible at first but might develop into something worse.

Food poisoning a very common disease but shouldn’t be ignored. One must seek medical help if the infection isn’t showing any signs of improvement. With the number of options that we have for food now, we should be careful and ensure that the source of our food is safe and reliable.
